About me:
I have a Doctoral in acupuncture from the Pacific College of Health Sciences in San Diego, CA and a Masters degree in Classical Chinese Medicine and acupuncture from the National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM). I’m a licensed provider through the Oregon Medical Board (OMB) and maintain national certification through the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). I’ve run a small clinic in Northeast Portland for over ten years and have worked for more than fifteen years with midwives to help provide care for laboring or birthing women in their homes, birthing centers or the hospital.
I am a faculty member at NUNM, where I teach integrative biomedicine as well as medical ethics & jurisprudence to Classical Chinese medicine students and naturopathic students. I love teaching and have educated students at both Traditional Asian Medical schools in Portland (NUNM, OCOM). I teach Taiji to our neighborhood community and continue to develop continuing education offers for other TAM providers.
Trauma-informed care is an important aspect of my work. I have completed certification with Dr. Joy DeGruy in African-American Multi-Generational Trauma and her groundbreaking work in Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome.
I am an Instructor and Camp Lead with the Acupuncture Relief Project (ARP) in rural Nepal. (You can read about some of my work in Nepal here). I also serve as Advisor for Special Projects to the Board of Directors for ARP. I love being a volunteer with the State of Oregon's Emergency Reserve Pool of Healthcare Volunteers (SERV-OR) and am a past board member of the Oregon Association of Acupuncture (2016-2017).
I have always loved science and mathematics and my undergraduate degree was in Physics from Portland State University (PSU) where my research work was in regards to the fringe fingerprinting of gold nanocrystals. Before this, I worked for many years as a chef (I love cooking!) and as a legal advocate for women through the YWCA’s SafeChoice program.
I am originally from Olympia, Washington and very much love the entire Puget Sound region and the smell of salt water. I am the mama of two amazing boys and get so much joy from watching them fully embrace their brilliant selves. In my spare time, I enjoy translating Classical Chinese medical texts, riding my Ducati, learning to sail and am working on my Scuba certification.
My lineage:
My understanding of food, dietetics and nutrition come from Chef Veronica Macias, Chef John Sikhattana, Chef Yoshi Kojima and specifically with Chinese nutrition from Yibin Benson Huang, MD, LAc.
I have been training in Taiji since 2008 with one of my most beloved mentors and teachers, Sifu PikShan Ko, a 5th Generation Lineage Holder, Kwong Sai Jook Lum Temple Praying Mantis School, Hong Kong, 1967. I practice the Yang Long-form and various standing meditations per his instruction.
My ability to be an educator was fostered and continues to be refined by my other dearest mentor and teacher, Andrew Schlabach, LAc. I became familiar with how to provide the most excellent clinical care, record keeping, orthopedic techniques, electro-acupuncture techniques and case management through working with him.
My herbal training was with Dr. Haosheng Zhang, MD, LAc and Dr. Joon Hee Lee, LAc and Dr. Heiner Fruehauf with continued training in Canonical Chinese herbal medicine with Arnaud Versluys, PhD, MD, LAc and Western herbal medicines with Dr. Glen Nagel, ND, Ryan Drum, PhD and Michael Pilarski.
My study of acupuncture, moxibustion, Gua-Sha, tuina and cupping therapies were with Dr. Youping Qin, LAc, Dr. Xiaoli Chen, LAc, and Dr. Rihui Long with continued training in visceral manipulation/CST with Michael McMahon, LAc, LMT and Kiiko Matsumoto Acupuncture with Monika Kobylecka, LAc.
My ideas around integrative biomedicine were sparked from Dr. Gabriel Weiss, ND, LAc, Dr. Edward Neal, MD, LAc and Dr. Paul Kalnins, ND, LAc. My most practical and clinical understandings of biomedicine and working in Western medical systems come from work with Andrew Schlabach, LAc and through the Acupuncture Relief Project in Nepal as well as providing team care with birthing people in Portland, OR.
My understanding of Classical Chinese medical psychology and pulse reading have been influenced by Dr. Brandt Stickley, LAc.
