Half-Moon Orca Support Circle
A space for connection, storytelling, reflection, and honoring the transformative power of menopause.
The Half-Moon Orca Support Circle is a small, intimate gathering designed to provide connection, support, and tools for navigating the transformative stage of life that women experience during perimenopause and the menopausal stage of life. Perimenopause typically begins in the early to mid-40s, but some may notice changes as early as their late 30s, while others may experience these shifts later. Anyone starting to experience the hormonal changes that define perimenopause and those already in menopause are welcome in this group.
It’s a space to explore the power and potential of the menopausal journey, moving beyond societal expectations to embrace creativity, resilience, and wisdom.
This circle draws inspiration from Granny, the wise matriarch of the Southern Resident orca pods. Like humans, orcas are one of the few mammals that experience menopause. Post-menopausal matriarchs like Granny play a vital role in their pods, using their experience and insight to guide younger generations through challenges such as food shortages and environmental changes. This legacy reminds us of what’s possible when energy shifts from reproduction to creative problem-solving and nurturing future generations.
Matriarchs like Granny pass down knowledge of hunting grounds, seasonal prey availability, and survival strategies, contributing to the survival and cohesion of their pods. Special behaviors, like hunting adaptations, are often unique to specific pods and transmitted culturally, meaning they are taught and learned rather than instinctual. Such innovations are typically attributed to matriarchs or other influential members of the pod who pass on these techniques through observation and teaching.
While our culture creates pressure to focus on external appearances and maintain youthful traits as we age, that can distract from the opportunity in front of us. We have the power to redirect that energy so that it can be used on the kind of creative problem-solving that can address the pressing issues of our time. The Half-Moon Orca Support Circle offers a space to normalize these changes, navigate the hiccups, and emerge with a renewed sense of purpose and power.
